SKILLS FOR ACADEMIC LIFE
SOARING TO EXCELLENCE

Skills for Academic Life

Study abroad, where English is the language of instruction and communication! Get accepted by prestigious universities from Europe and America!

Many 11th and 12th grade  high school students nowadays have to face the big challenge of lacking academic skills. Although their cognitive level is, in most cases, very good and their language competence could allow them to cope with English-medium instruction programmes, they often do not manage to follow academic lectures or comprehend academic discourses. Also, they find it challenging to study scientific texts or to express their ideas in writing or through speeches.

The aim of the course is to equip participants with the skills they need in order to cope with an academic English-medium instruction context. Since it is a course in English, its second aim is to develop language competence, which is necessary for the academic context. There will be much focus on lexis and grammar development, as well as on writing and speaking techniques.

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

- read any complex text actively

-  make notes while listening to complex speeches or while reading academic texts

- identify the relationships between ideas from texts and recorded messages

- write paragraphs and complex texts such as "academic essays"

- prepare and deliver speeches on academic topics

Although it is not a preparation course for academic English language qualifications, Skills for Academic Life is aimed at high school students or graduates who want to study abroad and have to take an English language examination. Participants will gain the necessary skills to pass such examinations, but they will not work on exam sample questions. Upon request, they may enrol in one of the preparation seminars or courses for IELTS or Cambridge English.

The duration of the course is of 20 weeks, with weekly sessions of two hours throughout the school year, except for school and bank holidays.
